What you need to know about DIT (Doctor of Information Technology) at Trine University

After years of preparation and rigorous approval from academic accreditation bodies, Trine University’s DIT (Doctor of Information Technology) program has been approved. The program has welcomed its first batch of international students in the Spring term starting January 2024, and supports day 1 CPT.

The DIT program is designed with students’ needs in mind, providing an in-depth understanding of the advanced challenges organizations face. By integrating information technology into real-world scenarios, students will evaluate the latest advancements in information technology, including developing solutions, designing advancements in new technologies, and identifying real-world industry challenges.

Students in the DIT program can expect courses centered around information systems management, application development, and IT management components. The curriculum showcases a mix of theory and practical experience through various teaching methods, including simulations, seminars, applied research projects, and in-person internships.

Graduates of the Doctor of Information Technology program will become experts in:

Evaluating the relevance of current and emerging technologies with business management theories and practices.
Developing solutions for common real-world technical issues in organizational operations.
Applying scholarly research in information technology to real-world problems identified within organizations.
Conducting rigorous research to contribute to the existing academic knowledge in the field.
Establishing communication with stakeholders through problem statements, research methods and results, potential solutions, and final evaluations.

Program Duration

The program can be completed flexibly between 2 to 5 years. By taking two courses each term and taking classes through the summer, the program can be completed in as soon as two years. A slower pace would allow completion in five years, taking one course each term with a break during the summer from early May to late August.

Tuition and Cost

The credit fee for Trine University’s DIT program is slightly higher than its master’s programs.

The DIT has a $1,000 deposit. $500 of which will be applied toward tuition.

There are five admission periods each year, with each intake enrolling up to 50 students.

Statement of Purpose Instructions

The Statement of Purpose is an opportunity to highlight your prior academic achievements and industry contributions. Upon reviewing a statement of purpose the reader must be able to identify your career goals, your academic and professional background, your areas of interest within the chosen field, and why you have chosen this program. A statement of purpose is a clear and detailed summary of your intentions for pursuing a doctorate degree. A statement of purpose must be written by the individual applying for admission. The statement of purpose is screened for artificial intelligence (AI), any statement of purpose found solely drafted by AI will receive a denial for admission.

Academic Writing Sample Instructions

An academic writing sample must show the candidate’s ability to conduct research and communicate effectively regarding their chosen field. Candidates should submit their prior academic research or professional work as a writing sample. The sample should range from10-20 pages in length. Academic work is screened using plagiarism and AI detection software. Writing samples found solely drafted by AI will receive a denial for admission.

The candidate’s writing sample is evaluated for the following:

1.Relevance to the chosen field of study.
2.A clearly stated problem statement.
3.A clearly stated research question or thesis statement.
4.Description of the research methods used.
5.A literature review that provides context for the research.
6.Clearly stated findings.
7.Analysis and originality of thought.
8.Proper use of grammar, formatting, citation, & proper APA is required.

Letters of Recommendation Instructions

The letter of recommendation encompasses a comprehensive list of the candidate’s qualifications, potential, and suitability for doctoral-level studies in the field of information technology. All letters of recommendation will be uploaded by the recommender OR signed by the recommender and sent to [email protected].

Below is a list of points the recommendation should include. It is highly recommended that most points be covered.

Academic Relationship:

1. Your relationship with the candidate and your knowledge of the candidate’s qualifications and accomplishments.

2. A summary of the candidate’s educational background, which includes graduate and undergraduate work.

3.Discuss the candidate’s academic performance. Include any honors, awards, or specific research projects relevant to the doctorate program.

4.Assess the candidate’s research abilities and potential as a scholar. Be sure to mention any publications, projects, or conference presentations the candidate has been involved with.

5.Explain how the candidate’s academic and research interests align with the program and why the candidate is a good fit.

6. Describe the candidate’s potential to make meaningful contributions to the chosen field of study through research or projects. Specifically, highlight areas the candidate could pursue.

Industry Relationship:

1.Your relationship with the candidate and your knowledge of the candidate’s qualifications and accomplishments.

2.Describe instances where the candidate has demonstrated leadership and their ability to collaborate with mentors.

3.Discuss the candidate’s relevant professional experience related to the degree program.

4.Comment on relevant industry projects that have equipped the candidate for doctoral level work.

5.Highlight the candidate’s personal qualities, such as motivation, perseverance, adaptability, and a passion for learning.

6.Describe the candidate’s potential to make meaningful contributions to the field through research or projects. Specifically, highlight areas the candidate could pursue.

Credit Transfer

Graduates from Trine University’s MSIS program can transfer 9 credits into the DIT program, while MSBA graduates can transfer 6 credits.

How do I get registered for courses?

After admitted, students receive an acceptance letter and intent to enroll form. Follow the instructions in these documents to get registered for courses.

When will I get my Trine email and account?

Once the student has met with their academic advisor, and the courses have been registered, Trine credentials will be established and shared with the student by the advisor.

Is there a dissertation?

No. The DIT has an applied research project focusing on solving practical, real-world problems by applying existing knowledge.

How many credits should I register for?

The recommended sequence suggests 12 credit hours per. 16 week semester.
